...returning books is so easy

City Library, Jablonec nad Nisou, the Czech Republic

At the beginning of August 2011, the local library in Jablonec nad Nisou ranked among those libraries in the Czech Republic which were allowing their readers to return books, magazines and even CDs and DVDs through a returns box.

Bibliobox allows readers to return borrowed materials independently of opening hours: evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. This service was received with satisfaction by the users despite initial fears whether the books returned in this way would really be credited to their reader's account.

We don't close Bibliobox during our opening hours, so it is at disposal all day long. This suits our older readers, who do not have to carry bags full of books up the stairs, and also mothers with prams, who drop off their books on their way into town, and borrow fresh ones later when they have more time.

We decided for Bibliobox by a selection procedure in which we assessed the price for the box itself, the graphic arrangement, installation and service training. Due to the fact that the returns box was to be situated on the square in front of the entry to the main library building, we were concerned that, due to the geographical position of the city, it would be subject to serious weather conditions. We were also worried about vandalism and unauthorized handling.

Bibliobox as a new element on the square catches the interest of passers-by due to its form and graphic arrangement. Perhaps it is due to this that some people change their directions.
